When it comes to the environment and the natural world, we regularly take out more than what we give back. Yet we rely on these natural resources for the highlights of our travel and tourism experiences.

These natural and environmental impacts are climate polluting greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, but also ecosystem pollution to water and land from sewage, plastics and farming for food.

GABI measures the impact harm to the climate and biodiversity and then calculates the financial cost to the environment. This financial cost is the amount that should be provided as a 'return to nature' and 'investment value' to fund improvements, promote change and regenerate the environment. We have found that both the venue and the guests appreciate the information and the ability to make a difference by giving a bit back.

The environmental impact harm is calculated as a cost per guest, or for the whole group (if it is a group event).
This harm impact cost is called the "Planet Tip", a discretionary element to enable guests to give back to the environment and for localities to improve their overall sustainability.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Food and beverage are a part of the emissions for holidays and events. We have based our impacts analysis of food emissions on international academic sources.

You may wonder why we have focused on a small number of foods and have not included food travel miles. We have selected the highest environmentally impacting foods and beverages because we are trying to encourage choices that are less impactful to nature. The food travel distance has not been requested because, based on scientific review, it is what you eat rather than its journey to you, that has the most climate and biodiversity impact.

Biodiversity Harm Impact Costs

The biodiversity harm cost of a product is often higher than the CO2 harm cost.
For instance, a single 330ml plastic bottle impacts the marine environment at $0.20(US) a bottle, while that same bottle is only $0.0002 in CO2 impact.
